How Does A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® Help?

When facing divorce, it can feel like your world has been turned upside down. There are so many questions to be answered, bringing fear and uncertainty to an already difficult situation. These one-time financial decisions have both short-term and long-term consequences.

Working with a CDFA® professional ensures you’ll have the analysis and understanding needed to make informed decisions about your settlement, and most important, peace of mind.

Here are some examples of what your CDFA® will help you understand:

Separate or Personal vs. Marital Property

Valuing Your Property

Dividing Assets and Debts

Retirement Savings and Pension Division

After-Tax Division Considerations

Options for the Marital Home and Mortgage

Lifestyle Analysis and Budgets

Ongoing health care coverage

Child Support

Spousal Support

Potential Tax Implications Resulting From Support Child-Related Decisions

Short-Term and Long-Term Impact of Proposed Divorce Settlements

A CDFA® professional will gather your information for analysis and then generate reports and graphs to illustrate the impact of various settlement options on your cash flow and net worth so you can make informed decisions.

CDFA® professionals often work with other professionals on your team, such as attorneys, tax accountants, pension fund administrators or financial planners, and can help reduce the overall cost of the divorce process significantly. Often, the analysis provided can be used as the basis for individual post-divorce financial planning.

While a CDFA® does not give legal advice, they may help attorneys by making sense of financial proposals or providing the tools they need to prove their cases. See www.institutedfa.com for additional information.

What I Do

As a CDFA®, I help clients identify and understand the financial issues of their divorce. I am instrumental in assisting my clients to arrive at a settlement that is beneficial for all by empowering them with the financial details and nuances that are often (almost always) overlooked in the divorce process. What appears to be an equitable settlement on the surface today may not be fair once the emotions have calmed and with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight.

Financial Projections

Leveraging software specifically designed to encompass the financial aspects of divorce, I generate sophisticated financial projections addressing the long-term effects of dividing property, integrating tax nuances into my analysis, pension plan issues, earnings capabilities, spousal and child support options, liquidity concerns, inflation rates, investment portfolio performance, and other financial issues relevant to separate agreements. I generate graphic reports and provide details and context that encourage dialogue between the divorcing couple and facilitates settlement, often keeping the divorce out of court, which dramatically reduces the cost of the divorce.

Personalized Support

My divorcing clients often ask whether I’m able to continue guiding them after their divorce is finalized. I am a Series 7 & 66 licensed fiduciary financial planner and provide comprehensive financial planning and investment management services through my firm, DirectPath Financial . I am honored to support you through your divorce. You can work with me only through your divorce or you can choose to continue the relationship post-divorce. But first things first, let’s get down to the business of divorce.
